What's New at MiraCosta College - Fall 2008

See the World at MiraCosta College

At MiraCosta College, students can experience what the world has to offer—even if they don’t leave campus. That’s because MiraCosta gives students, and the community, a wide choice of multicultural classes and events to suit every interest.

MiraCosta students don’t have to travel around the globe to learn an international language. The college offers classes in Chinese, German, Italian, French, Japanese and Spanish. Students and community members alike are also invited to attend the "International Conversation Café," held periodically throughout the academic year. These informal get-togethers give participants a chance to practice conversations in foreign languages and acquaint themselves with students from other cultures and countries.

MiraCosta also offers a wide variety of courses that explore cultures in different contexts, including Asian Philosophy and Religion, Dance Cultures of the World, History of African-Americans and History of Mexican-Americans in the United States, History of the Middle East, International Business, World Geography, World Music and much more!

Beyond the classroom, MiraCosta College sponsors such diverse (and free) activities as the Japanese Spring Festival, a Chinese New Year celebration and a Cinco de Mayo event. The college’s art, dance, music and theatre departments plan their events and concerts with an eye toward cultural diversity as well. In the past year, MiraCosta hosted a Latin jazz concert, a performance by the Mexican dance troupe Lux Boreal, an evening with poet Juan Felipe Herrera, an international talent show, and art and dance shows featuring multicultural influences. Plus, each semester the college hosts a popular free international film series that provides students and the community the opportunity to experience foreign films in their original language (with English subtitles). MiraCosta has a diverse student population, too. Hundreds of students hailing from 30 foreign countries are currently enrolled, making it easy and fun to learn about other cultures and countries just by talking to the student at the next desk. International and native students come together in many student clubs to learn about each other’s cultures. The International Club, Chinese Club, Japanese Club and the MEChA Club all afford students opportunities for enriching academic and cultural exchanges.

And for those students who are eager to get out and experience another part of the world, MiraCosta College offers a study abroad program in which students can spend a semester taking classes in a foreign country and living with host families.

"Studying abroad was the best educational experience I could have chosen," says Erica Diersing, who participated in the college’s Study Abroad Program in Florence, Italy. "It was fun to be able to incorporate travel into my studies while fulfilling my requirements to transfer. Soaking in the Italian culture opened my eyes to different styles of living and that there is so much more for me to live, see and experience."
