Annual Old Timers' Day

Until someone thinks of a better name for it, the annual Old Timers' Day will take place on Sunday, October 2. Sponsored by the California Surf Museum, long-time tourist attraction in downtown Oceanside, this special gathering attracts 200-300 surfers and their families from all over Southern California.

This year honoring the pioneer surfers of San Diego County over the age of 80, CSM hopes to bring together the historic characters from Imperial Beach to Sunset Cliffs, Mission Beach to Tourmaline, WindanSea to Oceanside. Come meet these iron men and women and hear their tales of surfing with big, heavy wooden boards and no wetsuits!

A very special guest will be 95-year-old Emil Sigler. He arrived in San Diego in 1926 and could only find one surfboard in town — lifeguard Charlie Wright's huge redwood plank. Emil borrowed the board, and taking his camera to the beach, took what were certainly among the earliest surfing photos. Emil soon qualified as one of a handful of lifeguards who guarded San Deigo County’s vast coastline at that time, then had to give up surfing in 1940 when he became a commercial fisherman.

Oceanside has a fabulous surfing history, and it can only be captured through tales and photos of the folks who come forward. Former Oceanside Mayor Arthur Britsch's homemade wooden board has been on display in the museum, and copies of photos, names and stories from and about Oceanside's homegrown pioneers are always needed. If you'd like to contribute to our collection, call or come by the California Surf Museum anytime — or better yet, bring Grandpa over for the afternoon on October 2!

Old Timers' Day will be held from 1:00-4:00 pm in the Community Rooms of the Civic Center Library. Admission is free. If you would like to enjoy the terrific luau, tickets are $12 for non-members; $10 for members; kids 12 and under $5. Please RSVP for the luau to 721-6876 by September 28.

The Moonlight Beach Strummers will be playing their ukuleles, along with dancers in the courtyard. Everyone is welcome to dust off their uke and join in!

Free parking is available in the Civic Center parking lot adjoining the Community Rooms.
