Oceanside Historical Society Presents:

Marshal South

Oceanside poet Marshal South will be the topic of a presentation by author and publisher Diana Lindsay on Saturday, October 1, at 10:00 am at the Oceanside Public Library Community Rooms. South is best known for the years between 1937 and 1947 when he with his wife Tanya and their three children lived on Ghost Mountain in what is now the Anza Borrego Desert State Park. Their life in the desert was depicted – and some say glorified – in monthly articles South wrote for Desert Magazine. Marshal South was born Benjamin Richards in Australia. He came to Oceanside with his mother and brother in 1913 and began writing poetry under the pen name of Marshal South. He organized the Oceanside Debating Club, the Oceanside Rifle Club and was the head of the American Defense League in Oceanside. South’s lifestyle and way of thinking would dramatically change. Marshal and Tanya met at the Rosicrucian Fellowship in Oceanside, and their three children were all born in the old Oceanside Hospital. Their family life sparked both controversy and curiosity. Diana Lindsay is well-known for her articles and books on the history, people and environment of the Anza Borrego area, and recently published an edition of Marshal South’s writings in partnership with Rider South. The presentation is sponsored by the Oceanside Historical Society. For questions, please call (760) 722-4786 or contact President Kristi Hawthorne at kristihawthorne@cox.net.
