Oceanside SUN 2003 Project: October 18, 2003

On October 26, 2002, 850 volunteers changed the appearance of an entire street. The SUN 2002 Bush Street Enhancement project did a one-day makeover to 55 properties on Bush Street with new paint, fencing, street and sidewalk improvements. As a follow up to this very successful 2002 project, the City of Oceanside will partner with community residents, volunteer groups, and corporate sponsors for Oceanside SUN 2003, an all day event being held October 18, 2003.

Oceanside SUN 2003 will make improvements to approximately 35 properties on Buena and Olive Streets in the Eastside neighborhood. The project will include house painting, fence and mailbox replacement, trash and debris removal, new street trees, sidewalk repair and parkway enhancements. Local businesses will participate and new sponsors will be announced as they are solidified. MiraCosta College has also added this event to their annual "Make a Difference Day" sponsored by the student government.

Bi-weekly community meetings led by a local Steering Committee are in place. A Planning Committee of City staff has also been establish to focus on the details of the event, gather volunteers, obtain necessary sponsorships and donations, and prepare the way for a successful workday.

Come join us! Volunteers may sign-up as individuals or as a group. A house captain will be assigned to each house and will have a detailed resource plan for improvements; volunteers will be directed to their project house on the day of the event. Registration will take place at Joe Balderrama Park at 8:00 a.m.; staging areas will be set up at various points to allow easy access to materials. San Diego Street will be open to through traffic, but streets in the project area will be closed for the day as a safety precaution.

Volunteers will be treated to food and drink, a t-shirt and a full day of work to improve the properties. SUN 2003 will have a lasting influence on the community as well as a memorable experience for those who participate. The success of SUN 2002 led the City to establish this as an annual event, which will continue in future years to other neighborhoods in the City.

Come get involved! To learn more about the project, or to volunteer, contact Dave Manley at (760) 435-3963, or dmanley@ci.oceanside.ca.us.
