Whether it's job skills, a healthier mind or a more fit body, MCCS probably offers a free social service or recreational program that suits your families’ needs. Here is a sampling:
Special events
Sailing Regatta: Commanding General's Cup intramural Sailing Regatta competition that will be Sept. 18 beginning at 10 a.m. Registration is at 9 a.m. before the race at the Del Mar Marina, Building 21550. Marines and sailors can view CG Cup standings and upcoming intramural events at www.mccscamppendleton.com. Call 725-6836.
Yard sale: Welcome home Marines and sailors. Replenish your unit funds by signing up for the All-Military Yard Sale Sept. 20 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Mainside Center parking lot. MCCS will provide tables, tents and chairs to units for no charge. Units provide the yard sale goods and keep the profits. Call (760) 725-5003.
Book signing: The Marine Corps Association Bookstore will celebrate its second anniversary with a book signing of "The March Up: Taking Baghdad With the 1st Marine Division," 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 23 at the store in Mainside Center. There will be coffee, cake and cookies. People can also enter a drawing for a limited edition, signed copy of the book "Legendary Marines of the Old Corps" throughout the week with the drawing on Sept. 27. Call (760) 385-0383.
Career Fair: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 25 at the South Mesa Club. Some companies will consider resumes and offer on-the-spot interviews at the Career Fair. If one's resume needs updating, service members and their families may use the free Community Support Services computer labs in buildings 13150 and 520512. There are also free resume writing classes offered regularly. Call 725-4737.
Strongest Warrior competition: Males and females may compete in the Strongest Warrior Competition at 7 a.m. Sept. 26 at the 33 Area Parade Deck. Competitors can participate in the Humvee Pull, Jeep Pull, Stone Carry, Military Press, Farmer's Walk and Tire Flip. The top three finishers in each weight class will win awards. The deadline to register is Saturday via all fitness center managers. Call 725-8737.
Women's Wellness Conference: This "celebration of life" expo will focus on women's and family health issues to remember national domestic violence and breast cancer awareness months from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 4 at Pacific Plaza. Call 725-6636.
Parenting groups
Baby Boot Camp: Learn how to take care of an infant in this free, two-day class that is held twice per month at the Abby Reinke Community Center. For more information, call (760) 725-3884.
Our First Friends: Moms and their babies can come to this group that provides social support, sharing and playtime, 10:30 a.m. to noon Thursdays at the Abby Reinke Community Center. For more information, call (760) 725-3884.
Play Morning: Simple crafts, songs, toys, and camaraderie for families and children age 5 and younger are offered in this class, 10-11:30 a.m. Thursdays at the Abby Reinke Community Center. For more information, call (760) 725-3884.
Parenting classes: The New Parent Support Program offers free parenting classes on an ongoing basis. Call (760) 725-3884 to register for the next series.
Spouse enrichment
International Culture Group: The Relocation Assistance office invites foreign and American-born spouses, base civilian employees and service members to attend its meetings and special events. For more information, call (760) 725-5704.
Career workshops: These ongoing classes are open to service members, spouses and Department of Defense civilians: career assessments; resume writing, federal application information and job interviewing techniques. For more information, call (760) 725-5361.
